Dissolve Test

Stir different things into water and see what disappears and what doesn't.

Materials

• cups
• water
• sugar
• salt
• sand or rice

1. Fill a few cups with water. 2. Let your little one stir a spoonful of sugar into the first cup. Watch it disappear! Where did it go? 3. Try salt in the second cup — also disappears. Now try sand or rice. It stays! 4. Explain that some things dissolve — they break into pieces so tiny you can't see them, but they're still there. 5. Taste the sugar water (it's sweet!) — proof that the sugar is still in there.
