Look at real coins together — learn the names and practice sorting them by size.

Materials

• assorted coins

1. Spread some coins on the table: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters. 2. Pick up each type: "This is a penny. It's worth 1 cent. See the copper color?" 3. Sort them into piles by type. Count each pile. 4. Play store: put a toy on the table and say "This costs 5 cents. Can you find the right coins?" 5. Keep it light and fun — the goal is just recognizing coins, not doing math.
