- junk mail or old envelope

1. Grab a piece of junk mail or an old envelope. 2. "This is like a bill. It tells us how much we owe for something — like the electricity in our house." 3. Open it together. Point to a number: "See? This says we need to pay $50." 4. Write a pretend check together on a piece of paper: write a name, the amount, and sign it. 5. "Bills are how we pay for things like our house, water, and lights. Grown-ups do this every month."
