Word Family House

Your child swaps the first letter of a word to build a whole 'family' — cat, bat, hat, mat, sat.

Category: Literacy · Duration: ~7 min

Materials

1. Write "-at" big on a piece of paper. Say, "This says 'at.' Let's see what family lives here!" 2. Add a C in front: "C-at. Cat!" Draw a tiny cat next to it. 3. Ask your little one, "What if we put a B there?" Help them sound it out: "B-at. Bat!" 4. Keep going — hat, mat, sat, rat. Let them try to sound each one out before you help. 5. Try one more family if they're into it: -an (can, fan, man, pan) or -ig (big, dig, pig, wig).
